Position Summary

Boise State University invites interested applicants to apply for the position of Financial Compliance Officer.  This person will be responsible for institutional financial compliance including compliance education for other departments and individuals in the University. They will engage in tax planning to minimize the University’s tax obligations and will work closely with the tax manager to ensure the University is meeting its payroll, tax-exempt bond, and unrelated business income tax obligations. The Financial Compliance officer will also assist in institutional compliance risk assessment, mitigation, and monitoring.

You will have the opportunity to: 

  • Assist in conducting annual institution-wide compliance risk assessment and work plan development, implement management plans, and conduct follow-up monitoring
  • Assist in investigations in response to compliance hotline calls or other reports of non-compliance
  • Develop appropriate metrics to benchmark hotline data
  • Assist in developing and delivering general compliance training programs to campus community
  • Oversee the accurate and timely filing of all international, federal, state and local tax returns including but not limited to payroll, unrelated business income tax, estates and trusts, payments to foreign persons and miscellaneous income tax returns
  • Stay abreast of current and emerging tax issues in higher education
  • Coordinate state and federal tax audits; ensure information provided is accurate, complete and timely
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure institutional compliance with Internal Revenue Code and Treasury Regs
  • Promote University awareness of tax matters and ramifications of non-compliance
  • Review and analyze contracts for private use issues


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting/finance or related field or equivalent professional  experience
  • Five (5) years experience in similar or same type of work
  • Experience in tax, preferably with a tax-exempt or governmental entity
  • Understanding of internal audit and/or compliance monitoring technique
  • Well-developed oral and written communication, analytical and organizational skills
  • General understanding of tax-exempt bond financing
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in tax, law or other relevant field
  • Experience in higher education
  • Experience in compliance role
  • Experience with PeopleSoft software
