Position Summary

Boise State University invites interested applicants for the position, Director, Recreation Services, to join us in our quest toward becoming a Metropolitan Research University of Distinction.  Serve as the chief administrator for the department of Recreation Services, which includes:  facility management, operations and risk management, direct oversight of fitness, aquatics and instructional programs, outdoor programs, and recreational sports programs, informal recreation, equipment rental and checkout, and special events. These services and programs contribute to a comprehensive recreation program for Boise State students, faculty, staff, and alumni.  Position reports to the Executive Director of University Health and Recreation Services.

You will have the opportunity to: 

  • Create and articulate a shared vision and mission for Recreation Services with all segments of the community
  • Create a vision for expansion of relevant new programs and services
  • Build consensus among Recreation staff regarding program, staff and policy development, risk management implementation and facility operations and management
  • Oversee planning and overall operational protocols for all program and service areas
  • Establish assessment measures to ensure best use of departmental funds, talents and energies
  • Develop long-range plans for facility, space needs and related financial planning
  • Oversee annual $2.6M Recreation Services budget
  • Develop long range business plans and forecasts including revenue generation and capital expenditures
  • Be responsible for all aspects of personnel management within Recreation Services

Integrate closely with University Health Services and Wellness programming

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree or Equivalent in Recreation Admin., Sports Admin. or Management, Kinesiology, or related field
  • Five (5) years’ experience supervising full time recreation professionals
  • Extensive knowledge of major recreation programmatic components (i.e. rec sports, outdoor programs, fitness, and aquatics) and management of related facilities
  • It is essential that the Director possess superior communication skills, be able to design performance expectations and learning outcomes, manage employees consistently and equitably, effectively teach others to supervise, and resolve conflict judiciously
  • Demonstrated fiscal responsibility and ability to oversee multiple budgets


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree or Equivalent in Recreation Admin., Sports Admin., Health Admin., Business Admin., Public Admin., Kinesiology, or related field
  • Seven (7) years’ experience providing leadership to a department of Campus Recreation, or similar, at an Assistant Director level or higher
  • Direct experience with capital facility construction projects
